Maison de l'Aubrac

Judith - Receptionist since 2011

Last year we took up a challenge testing visits from the Club des Sites display stand at the campsite, which you can follow here. This time I went to the North of Aveyron to La Maison de l'Aubrac, the Aubrac Home. As the name reveals, you can expect to find a little stone house on the Aubrac plateau in the North of Aveyron. Though the campsite is situated at the heart of the Aveyron departément, driving to the Aubrac plateau takes up to an hour and half alongside different scenery. I made a pitstop at Espalion to go and meet my colleagues of campsite Roc de l'Arche. From there, the Aubrac village is less than half an hour drive.

The Aubrac home reunites a shop, lunch room, tourism desk and information hall (video, informative signs, temporary exhibitions) and a botanic garden.

The conservatory offers a splendid view over the landscape which seems infinite. The catering is simple - they're slices of bread - but refined. Seated at a table we both enjoy the exceptionnal panorama and the taste of good aveyron food. Perfect for lunch or snack. When the weather is good, it is possible to sit on the outside terrace. When it's cloudy, like it was when I went, you appreciate the warmth of the sun through the windows.

The bread lunch will incite you to invest a few euros at the shop where you'll mainly find local food products, wrapped up nicely. Perfect to offer as a present to those who had to stay back home. As for me, I bought a pile of nice postcards for my personal collection.

A staircase leads to a room below where temporary exhibitions are hold. Some steps further from the stairs, the room is dark, the walls painted black, which is understandable because a video is played. It's regretful that there is no indication on the duration of the video. I didn't want to disrupt people watching and therefore did not get the chance to watch the exposition situated in the same room.

The tourism desk was closed. and I didn't get a clear answer on how to visit the botanic garden which we can see at the entrance of the Aubrac home.
It is obvious that real effort is put in this site, however, in my opnion the visit was too short compared to the long drive. That's why I advise others to better prepare their visit. Before going, ask what exhibition is currently displayed, whether there's a guided visit in the botanic garden and enquire about a visit of the village itself.

Having visited other sites in the north aveyron, I can advise to start by la fromagerie jeune montagne à Laguiole in the morning to see the working progress and taste the cheese (article foreseen), followed by a visit to the Laguiole knife museum in the same village (article here) and finish the day at the Aubrac Home.
